During Milan Design Week 2026, CIAM presents Untethered, a project developed around FreeGo°, the new refrigerated display case designed by Marc Sadler, one of the most influential international contemporary designers.
With a career studded with awards and collaborations with some of the world's leading design brands, Sadler has built his design language on the ability to integrate technological innovation, materials research, and functionality, transforming technical complexity into intuitive and elegant solutions. A multiple winner of four ADI Compasso d'Oro awards, some of his most iconic works are now held in the permanent collections of the most prestigious design museums: the back protector designed for Dainese is part of the collection of the MoMA in New York, while the Mite lamp designed for Foscarini is part of the collection of the Centre Pompidou in Paris, a testament to the international scope of his design research.
At the heart of the project is a true innovation for the professional refrigeration sector: the introduction of a highly autonomous battery power supply, allowing FreeGo° to operate even without a continuous power connection. Thanks to this hybrid system, which combines traditional wired power with a fully integrated rechargeable battery, refrigeration is freed from system constraints for the first time and becomes mobile, autonomous, and flexible.
Designed to support service in temporary and dynamic settings, from events to catering, retail spaces to hospitality, FreeGo° introduces the concept of nomadism applied to refrigeration. The structure, featuring large exposed wheels and integrated handles, clearly expresses this vocation for mobility, while the clean glass surfaces, multifunctional profiles, and rigorous simplicity of the interiors reflect Sadler's design approach, balancing technical performance with formal quality.
Presented at the CIAM showroom in Milan through an installation conceived by Fabrizio Milesi to interpret the themes of mobility and design freedom, Untethered represents a further step in the company's research. The project redefines the relationship between refrigeration and space, confirming CIAM's desire to pioneer new uses through collaborations with international contemporary design leaders.
